Let’s Grow up together this season! We are introducing our first article series for the year. This series focuses on the fundamental values that one needs to have in order to grow remarkably. The first value needed to flourish in our growth journey is Self-discipline

So, what exactly is self-discipline?

This is the act of delaying short term gratification in order to enjoy long term rewards. Basically, it’s the act of doing what you should do, even when you don’t feel like doing it. Especially when it’s something that will ultimately benefit you in the future.

Why is self-discipline so important?

Most people value short term gratification over long term rewards. You will most likely see content about “doing what you want to do whenever you want”. Well, that isn’t wrong, we all have the freedom to do what we want, but some things should take priority over others.

For example, binge watching a Netflix series on Saturday night should be less of a priority than studying for the statistics test on Monday.

Self discipline is the strongest form of self-love. You are loving yourself enough by giving up simple pleasures in order to contribute to the dreams of your future self.

Self-discipline tips:

  1. Continue pushing yourself in the right direction, especially when you no longer “have motivation”. Don’t always rely on motivation because it comes and goes. Always remember to set your eyes on the end-goal.
  2. Set realistic goals. Try to do one thing at a time. Giving yourself to many tasks will result in over-stimulation, which may become overwhelming. That is a gateway to procrastination.
  3. Just start right now! Don’t wait for the perfect time or mood because it won’t come.
  4. Protect your mental health at all costs. This means set healthy boundaries. If you feel like a certain task is making you gloomy and does not benefit you in any way, let it go. Unless the task in question is exercising or studying, in which case, you have to do it.

In essence, the culture of cultivating and practicing self-discipline is vital to growth. It evokes positive attitudes towards hard work and, in turn, attracts success in every aspect of your life.

That’s it for our first article in our series. Let’s continue growing together. Be sure to keep a look out for the next article.
