We celebrated World Health Day this year with the theme My Health, My Right. And the Namibian youth ought to be reminded of two important life treasures. First, we are all entitled to be healthy. Secondly, being healthy comes in three forms: Spiritual, mental and physical. You have the right to each.

As a youngster your body, in all its states, still has the full capacity to reap the incredible benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In taking control over where you see yourself in 10 years, the sky is the limit to feel better and happier.

Ed Northstrum once said, “It’s not a coincidence that four of the six letters in health spell heal.” Therefore, be healthy and healed in all three forms of health. Here’s why and how the youth take pride in health, healing, and stepping up to their rights.

According to Gabrielle Capelao, mental health refers to our overall wellbeing. It considers our emotional, psychological and social state. It often influences how we think, feel and act.

Capelao says that being self-aware, aware of our own feelings and thoughts, equips us to better manage them. Secondly, she advices youth to maintain their supportive relationships with friends and family because they provide a strong sense of comfort during difficult times. Thirdly, she says to set healthy boundaries, such as saying no. “Boundaries are essential for protecting your mental and emotional well-being,” Capelao adds.

“Remember, taking care of your mental health is an ongoing process which requires intentional attention and effort,” Capelao says. Adding, that by prioritizing ones’ mental health, you can lead a happier and more fulfilling life. “Don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you’re struggling,” the 22 year-old advices.

“The most important project you will ever work on is yourself and physical health and fitness is the cornerstone,” Pee-Rette van Schalkwyk states. van Schalkwyk shares tips for taking care of ones’ physical health.

Pro-tip #1: Don’t think too much about it, just start now.

Set small, achievable goals and routines. Start by planning workouts, meal preparation and relaxation. Find a partner or join a group of people (bootcamp) for support and motivation.

Celebrate your achievements (even small victories) and be patient with yourself. The journey takes time. – Rome was not built in a day.

Regular exercise and clean eating can have a very positive impact on academic performance. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain. This can improve attention, memory and cognitive function. Eating clean, high-calorie foods provides the brain with the fuel it needs to function properly, promoting mental clarity and productivity.

Pro-tip #2: If you decide to eat cleaner, it should not be a strict diet where you only eat leaves and drink water. It should be realistic, something you can adapt to for a lifetime, not just 28 days.

Pro-tip #3: Do not let yesterday’s mistakes take up too much of today. If you fell off the wagon yesterday and ate way too much and even went for seconds on dessert. Don’t guilt trip yourself today about it. Move on and focus on the 24hours ahead. Don’t try to do damage control rather stick to the initial plan.

As an athlete, I most appreciated the benefits that team sports provided as being part of a team has taught me valuable life skills such as communication, collaboration and teamwork. Subsequently, it has been a platform for developing friendships, developing empathy and leadership qualities. Moreover, I learned the following:

Confidence: Success in sports gives a person more respect and confidence. The challenges and obstacles I have overcome in the industry have translated into resilience in other areas of my life.

Discipline and Time Management: Attending practices has given me a culture of discipline, skills and time management.

Stress Relief: Sport has given me a way to tap into pent up energy, emotions and improve mental health. Engaging in physical activity can reduce stress and anxiety levels.

Setting goals in sports, whether individual or team, it teaches you to strive for excellence and work towards a specific goal. Achieving these goals creates a sense of accomplishment and motivation.

If you feel trapped in a cycle of working and neglecting your health, choose to halt your busy body and get sick and tired of being sick and tired most of the time. Start prioritizing looking after and maintaining the vehicle you use every single day, you! Your body, mind and spirit.

  1. This is an article I needed to read now. We often overlook taking care of our overall health for the sake of work and hustle.
